Jazz at the Philharmonic mayhem at its absolute best in this two-CD set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall on September 23, 1953. The gang is all here in this one: Flip Phillips, Ben Webster, Charlie Shavers, Roy Eldridge, Bill Harris, Benny Carter (who, in a rare instance, really plays to the gallery), Willie Smith, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and J.C. Heard are in the jam session numbers. The small groups? The Oscar Peterson Trio, The Lester Young Quintet and The Gene Krupa Trio (with Benny Carter and Oscar Peterson). Originally a three-LP set, now on two CDs. Yes, the LP squeaks and pops (and maybe a skip) are all intact, but this is music like you've never heard.
