It took us 40 years to track this one down, and here it is. The Napoleon Brothers: A Rare Musical Vintage was recorded around 1959 for the obscure, New York-city based Herald Records. Though Herald did release some jazz-oriented titles by the likes of Aaron Bell, Anthony Ortega, Sol Yaged and Doug Duke, their main specialty was recording vocal groups like The Five Satins. This LP, probably the only project done under Teddy's own name, came at a period when the brothers came off the road and were free-lancing around New York city. Marty came up with the two-piano concept, and they actually took this group on the road for a time. Some of this could be called mood music and some if it might be called jazz. Whatever it is, it's rare and it is Teddy and Marty. Bassist is the versatile Clyde Lombardi and drummer, believe it or not is one Ed Thigpen! As a bonus, we've included an equally rare item under Marty's leadership,recorded in April of 1958, entitled, get this: Marty Napoleon and His Music Plays for Suppertime Dancing and Easy Listening. We're not making this up, and only the good folks at Stere-O-Craft Records could have come up with that title. The recording is not, however, in stereo, but the good folks at Stere-O-Craft Records explain, and we quote, This is another in the unique series of outstanding hi-fidelity monaural recordings made from a Genuine true stereophonic master. Wow. This is another mood-type project, but dig the personnel: In addition to Marty, who's playing his organ/piano device, there's Chubby Jackson on bass, Mickey Sheen on drums, Joe Puma on guitar, and the one and only Carmen Leggio on tenor saxophone. On half the cuts, Carmen is doing Ventura, on the other half, he's imitating Lester Young. Yep. This is a must have.
