Saxophonist Boots Randolph, who just left us at the age of 80, was a country saxophonist (whatever that was or is), who played on thousands of Nashville sessions. But most folks are unaware, perhaps for good reason, that Boots spent a few seasons touring with a jazz group, similar to the one presented in 1964s Hip Boots, where Boots plays his own interpretations of Bird, Bobby Timmons, Brubeck, etc. Dig his baritone playing on Crazy Rhythm and think Charlie Ventura on steroids (not that there's anything wrong with that). Boots assmilated just about every jazz cliche' imaginable, and you've got to love him, if only for that! As Lawrence Welk may have say, Poy...Poots...you sure play some sax!
Part two of this great CD is, to the best of our knowledge, the only recording that Harry James' tenor saxophonist, Corky Corcoran, ever made under his own name. Recorded in 1970 on a private label in Corky's hometown of Tacoma, WA, this lovely set of ballads features another great James alum, Jack Perciful, on piano, as well as James' bassist at the time, John Smith.
